What is a wet timing belt?
A wet timing belt, sometimes called a belt-in-oil timing belt, does the same basic job as a conventional timing belt. The main difference is that it runs inside the engine in the engine oil.
Wet belts are fitted to a number of modern petrol and diesel engines. Over time the belt can start to deteriorate, especially if the wrong engine oil has been used or servicing has not been carried out at the correct intervals.
Why wet belt condition matters
As a wet belt starts to break down, small pieces of belt material can get into the engine oil.
This material can build up around the oil pickup and restrict the flow of oil through the engine. This can cause low oil pressure and lead to more serious engine problems.
Checking and replacing the belt at the correct time can help prevent these problems.

Wet Belt Replacement

If the old belt has started to deteriorate, the oil system can also be checked and cleaned to remove belt material that has built up inside the engine.
Once the work is complete, the engine is reassembled and checked before the vehicle is returned.

Using the correct oil is particularly important with a wet belt because the belt runs directly in the engine oil.
Using the wrong specification of oil or leaving too long between oil changes can contribute to the belt deteriorating sooner than expected.
